Department of Chemistry

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Chemistry has established in the year 2009 with Chemistry as an optional subject. Department has always placed emphasis on both teaching and co-curricular activities in order to motivate the students. Class tests, Assignments are given to the students to enhance their curricular performance.

Study tours, visits, guest lectures, and seminar are few of the co-curricular activities organized by the department which certainly prepare the students to face the future challenges. Department has well qualified experience teachers. Teachers of the department participate and present research work in various International, National and State level conferences. Our faculty members are also engaged in doing their research activities. Department’s Dr. Shitre G. V. and Dr. Khiste S. A. have awarded Ph.D. Degrees. The Assistant Professors Mr. ShendgeP. R. and Mr.Kele K. V. have registered for their Ph.D. work. Last but not the least the students of our department are well known for their academic career, result and their placement is concerned.

SCOPE AND IMPORTANCE OF CHEMISTRY

After receiving a degree in chemistry, there are numerous career opportunities in the discipline. B.Sc. Students typically choose in one or more sub-disciplines based on their interests. The graduation in chemistry helps the students to develop their skills in the areas like numerical and computing skill, laboratory skills etc. The possibilities available to graduates for further education are varied. Students can apply for Master’s Degrees at reputable colleges and universities. Because chemistry is crucial to the growth and development of companies, there are many job opportunities for students in sectors like paint, petroleum, sugar, plastics, and medicines. The most significant employers are typically found in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry, government chemical laboratories, and universities. In addition to these, students can also be appointed in departments of forensic science, agro industries, oil and gas companies, and even defence organisations like DRDO.  After finishing their PG programmes, applicants who are interested in research can enrol in a PhD programme. If they are interested, they may also apply to IISERs for integrated PhD programmes. Candidates who want to work in education can take the UGC NET exam and apply to become assistant professors at colleges or universities.Apart from these students can also be recruited in other fields like forensic science department, agro-industries,oil and gas corporations and even in defence institutes such as DRDO. Candidates can also try for IIT’S, NIT’S and central universities. Those candidates who are interested in research can join for PhD course after completion of PG. They can also go for IISERs for integrated PhD courses if interested. Candidates who are interested in career of teaching field can attend UGC NET exam and join as assistant professor in college or universities.

  • In short the opportunities in the chemistry are as follows-
  • Lab Chemist
  • Pharmaceutical industries.
  • Universities and Colleges
  • Production Chemist
  • Indian Oil Corporation
  • Scientists and researchers at ISRO, DRDO, BARC etc.
  • R&D Director
  • Chemical Industries
  • Materials Technologist
  • Factories
  • Research & Development Manager
  • Safety Health And Environment Specialist
  • Quality Controller
  • Industrial Research Scientist
  • Analytical Chemist

IMPORTANCE

Chemistry is a crucial subject that is very important to our daily lives. Because it connects other sciences, including physics, biology, geology, and environmental science, chemistry is frequently referred to as the “central subject.” Chemistry education is crucial for raising the standard of instruction and research, as well as for equipping students with the information they need to create significant goods and services that will meet peoples’ demands for food, health care, and other things.

1) Food supply – Of the three basic necessities of a person, food is the most crucial. It is essential for human survival that there is a food supply. The manufacture of chemical fertilisers like urea and ammonium sulphate, among others, which significantly increased the yield of crops, fruits, and vegetables, is made possible by the study of chemistry. The growing need for food due to the growing population is met in part by artificial fertilisers. By using insecticides, pesticides, and fungicides, chemistry aids in the defence of crops against hazardous germs and insects.

2) The Role of Chemistry in Environmental Preservation – Green chemistry knowledge allows us to create substances that are environmentally friendly and aid in nature preservation. A good illustration of this is the replacement of CFCs in refrigerators.

3) Improving Health and Sanitation Facilities – Chemistry has contributed significantly to the development of several life-saving medications for the benefit of mankind.

Increase in Comfort, Pleasure, and Luxuries: a) Synthetic Fibers: Chemistry offers a variety of synthetic fibres that are quick to dry, easy to wash, and chemically resistant, such as nylon and terylene.

b) Transportation – Diesel or petrol, both of which are chemical compounds, is the fuel used in all transport vehicles.

c) Domestic use items – Chemistry has improved the comfort of our homes by producing a huge variety of domestic use items. For instance, glass, paper, plastics, and cosmetics.

d) Entertainment – Celluloid-based films are used in entertainment equipment like video cameras.

e) Building construction – Chemistry provides cement, steel, and other materials that help build safer dwellings.
